Indeed, “the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware.”

Last month, the world witnessed the remarkable saga of the FIFA World Cup. Within a span of a few weeks, historic alterations have been made in the pre-conceived notions of society and culture. Right from the start, it was the ‘hot topic’ on every platform – offices, schools, universities, and restaurants were relentlessly chanting the FIFA mantra. Discussions constantly circled around the renowned football; social media were brimmed with sports coverage – irrespective of age and gender, everyone had their say in it.
Qatar hosted and facilitated an epic game season; the existence of a thriving alternative culture has impressed and created a ripple impact on many. During this phase, people from different corners of the globe united to support and cheer for their teams – regardless of their background, language, race, or interests, unity was radiated. Every goal, penalty or miss created unified responses. All were one, and despite conflicting differences, they grouped themselves to be together and that is called a family, even if temporarily.

It is said that if not for the irony of birth and the bond of blood, if family members were to group themselves based on other determining areas of personal interest, none of the existing family members would have been together. Yet with all the variations, nothing can replace the love and care incorporated into a family – from cradle to grave.

Often, the beauty and power of this God-gifted bond are either overlooked, taken for granted or left to tarnish. Hence, on January 1st every year, ‘Global Family Day is celebrated to remind oneself and start the year with the positive message of unity in this world. It emphasizes the idea of the world as a global village in which we are all family, regardless of citizenship, borders or race. It is the idea of starting the year with a good message of harmony around the globe. As the Holy Quran states in Surah al Hujurat, Ayat 13,

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Aware.”

People often love one another for a reason – love has never been unconditional, except in a family where a mother loves her child flawlessly or a child loves his parent unconditionally. This extent of love, care and respect that can only be witnessed within the close ties of the family is expected to emanate by every Muslim towards humanity. Loving people without any arbitrary distractors is a spiritual pinnacle for Muslims. The extent of love that needs to be inculcated can be understood in another hadith where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “None of you will have faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Sahih Bukhari) One can only imagine a world where peace and love would overflow if these teachings were followed. Considering humanity as a family is an essential fabric of life and a strong basis for personal success.
