Imagine going to a restaurant every day. On the first day, the waiter offers you different beverages like tea, coffee, lemonade, coconut water, cold drinks etc. and, you choose coffee. On the second day, you pick coffee again, the next day; the waiter may not give you the options. He might smile and ask, “Your coffee Sir?” and you nod yes.
Now, do you realize how your programming shapes others’ behaviour towards you?
That is how we influence our surroundings, and we say that our surroundings influence us.
Let’s say, after some days, you get concerned about your caffeine intake, and when the next day the waiter brings you coffee, you would consciously refuse and ask him to bring fresh coconut water. The waiter will be surprised, but he will serve you anyway. The next day he will present all the options once again. If you pick coconut water again, he might start offering you coconut water from then onwards.
Taking coconut water instead of coffee will not be easy for you. You might feel discomfort at the beginning, lack of energy or not being fresh enough for the rest of the day. But if you are concerned about your caffeine intake and you stick with this routine after sometimes you won’t feel that urge to drink coffee and start enjoying the freshness of coconut water.
Could you change your habit? Yes, you could.
A habit is nothing but the programming of the mind that can be changed by conscious decision-making and repetition.
Remember, our habits influence our surroundings. So if you are concerned about your health, education, career, relationships or anything in your life, start by making a conscious decision for its improvement and keep repeating it on a regular basis.
A little effort can gradually change everything around you.
- Dress up:Start your day by taking a shower and getting dressed up. Only this minor habit will boost your confidence for the rest of the day.
- Read: Start reading a book every day for ten to fifteen minutes only. That will certainly improve your knowledge. You will learn and get fresh ideas and thoughts. That will help you to grow as a person, as well as in your career.
You will soon develop a habit of visualization. Visualization means imagining yourself somewhere you want to reach. When you visualize yourself achieving your goals, it will give you more energy to achieve them in your real life as well.
- Organized Planning: Plan your day, and set the priorities for every day. You can start by making your bed every morning. These little things will give you a sense of accomplishment. An organised lifestyle will protect you from the everyday rush, and you will be able to do the prime tasks first.
Former President, APJ Abdul Kalam has said: “You cannot change your future, but you can change your habits, and surely your habits will change your future.”
So take charge of your future in your own hands and write it the same way you want it to be.
