There was a time when sleep deprivation was restricted to elderly and old people. We used to hear that they have trouble falling asleep. But these days, this problem is not limited to them. In fact, today’s young generation is also trapped in this problem. At present, insomnia or sleep deprivation is one of the biggest problems worldwide and has become a chronic disease which not only affects the elderly, but also a considerable number of young people. As per the Philips Global Survey 2021, out of the total world’s population, 62% of people concluded that they have improper sleep at night or are deprived of good sleep at night. In a developed country like the United States, 7 crore people report facing sleep deprivation. They have an issue of insomnia. In our country too, this is becoming a prominent issue, and one crore people in India are affected by insomnia every year. According to the survey, most Indians have only 72 minutes of good sleep. The rest of the night, they sleep but it does not relieve their physical and mental fatigue. According to experts, a person needs 240 to 270 minutes of deep sleep so that the body and mind can be refreshed and ready to work. By getting enough sleep, the human mind can remember things and can ponder over new ideas, carry out research and explore. Without adequate sleep, the human mind is not capable of doing any creative work or analysis. Quantity and quality of sleep varies in accordance with the way people live. The problem of sleep deprivation is not the same everywhere. It deviates according to one’s lifestyle and daily activities. Scientific research is happening in the world on how it relates to food and drink. Crores of rupees are being spent for the prevention of this disease through research. Nowadays, there are numerous sleeping pills available in the market and this has formally taken the form of an industry. Apart from mere sleeping pills, there are many companies offering promises of better sleep in the market. The market of tools and services inducing sleep are on rise and by 2022, that trade is expected to reach about 100 billion. In the United States alone, these sleep technology products or companies that manufacture sleep and scientific products have growth rates as high as 12% per year. This gives an idea of how serious this problem is. So, what are the devices that are being developed to provide good sleep? This is an engrossing topic. Distinct scientific research is being carried out in different countries. As stated earlier, the reason for falling asleep vary from place to place, for example: some people are comfortable on a soft mattress, while some on a hard one .The mattresses used by people in Germany are generally hard, while in America, mattresses used are immensely soft or cushioned, while in our country both type of mattresses are used. A company called McKinsey has recently issued a statement on the topic of “Global Sleep Health Economy.” It has encouraged the public to invest in the company. As claimed by the company, there are basically three types of products that are related to good sleep: ‘ambience optimization’ for example, how should the mattresses and pillows be in terms of providing comfort and better sleep to the users; second, ‘routine modification’. Most parents understand the value of establishing a consistent bedtime routine for young children, yet few adults have regular bedtime routines that set them up for a good night’s sleep. So, a regular time to sleep and wake up is very essential for healthy sleep .There are many devices available in the market today that can tell you how much sleep you get to have every night, what level of deep sleep you get, what percentage of sleep you get etc. The third is medical treatment. This includes getting treatment from doctors and various medicines. A separate department has been set up by the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies to conduct regular research and keep introducing new medicines on the subject. The fact is that this problem has taken the form of a complete industry.

As specified by experts, sleep deprivation is mainly related to lifestyle issues. Causes of insomnia include stress in daily activities, work load in the workplace and at home etc. People bring work stress to their homes and likewise their home problems to their workplace, a condition that can lead the way for sleep disorders and stress because of which they lose their peace of mind. On the other hand, physical stress is also a problem. Getting stuck in traffic, related issues etc. The third reason includes eating habits. It is also a major cause of insomnia. Eating too much can also interfere with sleep, by which anxiety arises. Experts also point out that blue light is also a major cause of insomnia. Electronics like mobiles, TVs and computers are said to be the root causes of blue light. By keeping ourselves busy late into the night with apps and scrolling, we are creating natural changes in our circadian rhythm and sleep cycle, sleeping late at night and getting up late in the morning, which not only deprives one of complete sleep but also from doing chores in the day properly.

One of the most important reasons for this is that human beings are totally engrossed in this material world. They have become so engrossed in this mortal world that they don’t remember their true purpose of existence. The desire to be materially superior to one another has robbed us of spiritual peace. The world is in search of that peace. The people of the world are spending their precious time and money to fix the symptoms without searching for the root. They are using various means but still they are failing to find peace.
