Women’s roles in STEM are critical for breaking down stereotypes and encouraging change. We can create a more egalitarian and innovative future in STEM by recognising historical problems, appreciating successes, fostering diversity and inclusion, and empowering the next generation. By working together, we can ensure that women’s views and talents are valued and that they have equal opportunities to excel in STEM professions.

WHAT:

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is an umbrella term that groups the distinct but related technical disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Stem is typically used in connection with an individual’s education and career choices. Owing to socio-economic reasons and inherent gender stereotypes and norms, Men have historically dominated the STEM areas. Women are often deprived of access to resources that could help them reach their full potential, but there is a growing effort to promote female representation and engagement.

According to the US Department of Commerce Economics and Statistics Administration, women account for only 24% of STEM employment, with specialised fields like engineering having a substantially higher gender disparity. According to the American Community Survey (ACS), women’s STEM employment increased from 8% in 1970 to 27% in 2019. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2023, women represent 27% of India’s STEM workforce. These statistics are disheartening as gender equality remains an elusive aim.

HOW :

Various initiatives focusing on mentorship, support networks, and activism play vital roles in eliminating these barriers and empowering women in STEM. Organisations and individuals are working relentlessly to close the gender gap and provide women an opportunity to succeed.

WHY :

• Women in STEM serve as role models for future generations. When young girls see women succeeding in these fields, it inspires them to dream big and pursue careers in STEM. Representation matters, and female scientists, engineers, and technologists are paving the way for others to follow. Their achievements deserve recognition and celebration. By showcasing their accomplishments, we can inspire future generations of women to pursue their passions in STEM and believe in their abilities.

• Diversity and inclusion in STEM are critical to innovation and growth. Gender diversity adds new perspectives, experiences, and ideas, resulting in more creative problem-solving and groundbreaking discoveries. Creating supportive settings, enacting inclusive policies, and encouraging collaboration among educational institutions, corporations, and government bodies are critical steps toward this objective.

• Promoting girls’ interest and participation in STEM from a young age is critical. Giving kids access to STEM education, exposing them to inspiring role models, and providing mentorship opportunities can pique their interest and passion. Parents, educators, and politicians play important roles in developing and empowering girls in STEM disciplines.
