The recent landslide in Mundakkai – Chooramala, Wayanad, Kerala, brought devastation and chaos to the region. At the same time, it showcased the incredible spirit of humanity and volunteerism. It was heartwarming to see the selfless dedication of volunteers at Mundakkai—Chooramala, who continue to work tirelessly in search of missing individuals, provide essential aid, and support those affected by the disaster. Among the many heroes who emerged during this crisis were the IRW volunteers, Team Welfare, EMF doctors, Government officials, Indian Army Personnel, WINGS Psychologists, and countless other volunteers.

The Peoples Foundation and EMF doctors camp were beacons of hope, operating around the clock with unwavering dedication. A sea of selfless individuals, both men and women, worked unflaggingly to relieve those affected. Some distributed food and essential materials to homes, while others ensured a steady supply of stocks.

Volunteers were treated well, with nourishing meals, comfortable accommodations, and access to prayer facilities, ensuring their well-being and safety.

The Muslim community, often misunderstood and maligned, reveals its true essence in times of crisis. This is especially true of the Muslim women, who defied expectations and stepped up to play a crucial role in the relief efforts. They emerged as beacons of hope, leading the charge in emergency assistance. The disaster is a testament to their unwavering dedication. They were the unsung heroes who appeared in the mortuary, working unwaveringly to bring dignity to the deceased. They washed and prepared the bodies, ensuring a dignified farewell for the departed. Their strength and resilience served, inspiring others to follow suit.

A dedicated IRW lady volunteer from Kannur reminisced about her experience. She and her team were tasked with the solemn duty of washing and preparing the deceased for postmortem, a process that requires immense mental and emotional fortitude.

To prepare the IRW team for this challenging task, the volunteers received guidance and support to help them cope with the experience.

They were warned that the bodies, having lain for three days, would be significantly heavier and more difficult to handle. Despite this, they were met with a poignant sight: intact bodies, though beset by a thick layer of mud, approximately 2 cm deep, which obscured the faces, making recognition impossible.

To ensure their safety while performing this critical task, the volunteers were instructed to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, a precautionary measure to prevent potential health risks. Concurrently, WINGS psychologists braved the field, venturing into the heart of the disaster zone. They provided psycho-social first aid, offering a listening ear and emotional support to those reeling from the trauma.

During our visit to the disaster-stricken areas, we were struck by the remarkable resilience of the Muslim families affected. After having lost their loved ones, homes and possessions, they exhibited a profound sense of patience and acceptance. Their unwavering faith in the face of unimaginable tragedy was truly inspiring.

The victims found solace in their belief system, acknowledging that their struggles were a test from the Almighty. This unshakeable conviction brought them comfort and strength, shielding them from despair and hopelessness. Notably, the hint of suicidal thoughts was low in Muslim families.

The collaborative efforts of various organisations and individuals underscored the power of compassion and unity in the face of disaster. As one volunteer poignantly noted, “ In the midst of devastation, we found humanity.” The compassionate deeds served as a testament to human spirits, capacity for resilience, empathy, and kindness. Though the disaster’s impact may have been so severe as to leave permanent scars, the bravery and compassion displayed by these unsung heroes and heroines will forever be etched in the hearts of those affected.
