The myth which needs to be broken with skill development is that you are either born with the skills or not. We often hear born leaders, born speakers, and natural communicators. We should never believe in the myth – skills can’t be learned.
Skills are essential to the development of individuals and to take on the challenges of today’s globally interconnected world.
The world is changing rapidly, therefore; it is important for every student and youth to develop their skills. A global community requires learned and skilled people. Young people need to develop their knowledge, skills, and values to live, work, and contribute effectively to a global economy.
The world is changing its ways. Therefore, the youth need skills and competencies to fit in this era. Employers are of the opinion now that the youth have a number of qualifications, but don’t always have the skills that they want in their workforce. Every employer demands higher-order thinking skills.
Students particularly need to understand that every skill can be broken down and learned step by step. There is no option of choosing between skill and knowledge. Both need to be built together.
Every youth needs to balance knowledge, values and skills. Always have strong basic skills like literacy and numeracy. Core skills must be learned, which are highly transferable, and technical skills which are focused on learning. You need to master basic skills and also need to acquire core skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, communication and collaboration, creativity and imagination, student leadership, citizenship, and digital literacy. Core skills are powerful for ensuring that children and young people succeed.
The youth must focus on critical and problem-solving skills. You must be able to solve complex situations. You must be strong in your communication and collaboration skills. This era is all about being competent and competitive. You should understand that we can solve every problem with the right approach to communication. Teamwork plays a very important role in every field. You must focus on your behaviour and working in a team. Learn to be supportive, encouraging, and a motivator. Developing leadership skills makes anyone stand out from the crowd. Learn to lead a team and acquire the skills to motivate your team. The most important skill every youth must develop is being creative and imaginative. In the time of artificial intelligence, one must be able to use his/her creativity and imagination to explore opportunities.
Let’s focus on developing skills with knowledge and grabbing every opportunity to enhance our skills.
